Children's Laureate announcement at the Globe…

Today at the Sam Wannamaker Theatre at the Globe, the new Waterstones Children’s Laureate was announced. Lauren Child gave a terrific and witty summary of her two years as Laureate before handing it over to the new Laureate Cressida Cowell. Go Cressida. She’s a perfect successor.

Single file only. No talking…

The bridge near my house is closed to traffic. Pedestrians can still cross, so too bicycles and motorbikes. The poor bridge is getting old. Walking over the bridge is not as pleasant as it once was because of the increase in walkers and to make it worse, we have to walk single file. The council has even added these white figures to indicate where to walk, or maybe the correct posture for walking. I don’t know for sure. I hope the bridge reopens soon.

King beats Queen…

I watched a baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. I was impressed by the speed of the pitches. Unbelievably fast. No wonder there are few hits by the bat. I was also impressed by the volume of the music and the frequency of the sideshow entertainment. One memorable event was a footrace between Winston Churchill, The Loch Ness Monster, Freddie Mercury and Henry VIII. Freddie lost by the skin of his teeth.

Mrs Dalloway and fire engines...

Hatchards Piccadilly has a nice window with Penguin English Library’s Mrs Dalloway juxtaposed (next to) a fine photo of the author. Virginia Woolf has some nice author pics. As I looked into the window a fire engine screamed past with sirens wailing, a modern reality like the planes on the book cover that caught Mrs Dalloway’s attention. Heavy, right?
