The arm offensive…

My new picture book includes a long, long arm and a short, short bug. Bugs are generally short, however I saw a Christmas beetle that was ABOUT THAT BIG. For real.

Cut paper. Make collage. Glue. Rest…

The side effect of collage at the end of my desk looks nice but gets in the way.

Making collage is very satisfying, it's very crafty and structural and makes a good deviation from drawing for me. I must use very light paper, I can't stand there being a bump in the papers when they're pasted down and the heavier the paper, the more chance there is of this happening.

A can of spray glue sells for the price of a slab of beer and if the nozzle clogs, you must find a new nozzle or throw the can away. They don't sell individual nozzles. This is why the Russians took a gluestick into space.

In-conversation with Lauren Child at London book festival…

I'll be In-Conversation with Lauren Child at the Barnes Festival on Saturday May 14th at 10.30am. We'll be talking about how Lauren goes about making a book, from her rough thoughts up to the inky end result, and lots in-between. There'll be a bit about typography and why it's so important to Lauren's storytelling. We've been working together for fifteen years so there will be plenty of anecdotes about Ruby Redfort, Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean and other things.

The conversation is titled I Don't Remember Saying That.

You can ask questions and get answers and Lauren will be signing her books too.

Wee Write in Glasgow…

Thank you to everyone at the Mitchell Library for their help when I was there on Friday, especially Margaret, Anne Louise, Donald and Fraser. A good time was had by all and there were excellent vampires drawn by the kids.

It can't be overstated.
